because performing on stage is to be part of the sound... the sound on stage is genaraly the loudest... if you perform alot then the sound decibles become harmful to the human ear and can do signifigant damage even after just a couple of shows.

one is an earpiece to protect their ear from repeated exposure to loud music which is a common occurance in hearing loss when people are constantly up against the speakers that are way loud. And it's also to hear the music they're playing and singing too as well.

They aren't generally earplugs, they are small transmitters so they can hear the beat/tempo over the rest of the band
