I work part time at an ice cream shop.
(it is in NO WAY a posh place)
When i asked my customer to repeat their order by
saying "come again?"... my boss told me she had
never heard anyone using that before and told me
i was being rude to the customer.

what do u think?

the working environment is very casual and i'm usually very upbeat and bubbly when i'm serving my customers. they dont seem to have a problem, nor do they look offended in anyway...

but thanks for the advise... i should probably just say "pardon" or "sorry" to shut my boss up.

It's OK to use slang when talking to a friend or family, but when talking to customers, it is more appropriate to say, "pardon me?" It may not be posh, but they are still paying customers, and "come again?" is rude in that case.

I guess she was expecting you to say "excuse me, could you repeat that?" or something more formal, since "come again" is considered more casual and informal. Even though it is an ice cream shop, I think your boss wants to portray to the customers a good image of the customer service through that of proper communication.

Wonder how old your boss is, and what part of the country the Hail from. "Come again" is a perfectly acceptable way to ask someone to repeat themselves. I am from Indiana, and have heard this phrase contless times, along with saying "Sir?." or "Ma'm?," in the same manner. Sounds to me like your boss needs to realize that "they is" many ways to say something.

Tell your boss that an internet friend was asking "How's your momma and them?" (How is your mom and your family doing?)

in normal conversation, I would say it's not rude.. but cashiers are expected to be EXTRA polite to customers, so your boss probably wants you to say something like "please repeat that" or something.. personally when I'm at a restaurant, I don't care what the waiter says as long as they bring me my food..

I was at a restaurant one time and the cashier was joking around a little with me and the manager came out and yelled at him.. I felt like telling the manager to quit being such a jerk.. I didn't though cause I didn't want to make the manager moer upset with the cashier..

I always say "Excuse me," or if it's loud at the work place I apologize and say it's a little loud today and I couldn't hear everything they said.

"Come again" might be rude, especially if the other person misunderstands the tone.

Come again? I didn't hear you. Oh, you say your boss is an idiot? I see. Tell your boss he/she needs to get out more. Maybe talk to some older people or people who can't hear well ( like me) I find myself saying it all the time because I can't hear.

Lil' Sammy, it seems that your boss never heard of that phrase before and interprets it differently (possibly of sexual matter).

"Pardon?" or "Please say that again?" or "Again, please?" are acceptable; and if the client does not understand you still, simply raise your hand close to your ear (not neccessarily touch it) with your eyebrows raised, hopefully you will understand each other.
