His name is Professor Donald Knuth. Most people would not have heard of him, but people like Bill Gates, Linus Torvalds and other famous people would probably agree that the greatest computer programmer in the world at the moment, and also the greatest authority on the subject of programming is a man called Donald Knuth. He is a professor now and has written a series of books which are treated as 'bibles' by computer programmers.
It definately is NOT Bill Gates. Someone wrote that we probably would not have the internet if it were not for Bill Gates...LOL!!! He is not even a computer programmer - he is a businessman. Bill stole his idea of microsoft windows, from an existing system called Unix. Unix used something called the 'X windows system' and Bill gates stole this idea. He then got other people to modify the code for it, being unable to do it alone. This is a fact.
Apart from this fact, the internet existed before Bill Gates dropped out of college. Networking protocols and everything which makes the internet work, were developed on UNIX based computer operating systems.

We probably wouldn't have the internet if Bill Gates hadn't been born. He created DOS the first end user friendly, disk operating system, this started an onslaught of personal computers, then came windows which is really still DOS only more user friendly, having studied computers since that old Commodores were in, where if you wanted to play a game you had to write the program in and it wasn't BASIC computer language it was symbols and so on.
Gill Gates is definitly the best. Even MacIntosh computers had different operating systems every time you upgraded so all your old files would not be able to open in your new computer unlike the Windows application that can still read old DOS files, of course they have (Mac's I mean) corrected that problem and have tried to say that they thought of the user friendly program before Gates but we all know that is only sour grapes.
This for jlacroix, Bill sold his program to IBM, which was just a main frame company prior to Mr. Gates great invention. IBM could not conceive that an average Joe could understand how to operate a computer they had no vision, unlike their employee.

The only objective measurement we have for the best computer programmer is something called "TopCoder", a kind of "Top Gun" for computer programmers around the world. It's a by-invitation-only event which pits the best college and business programmers in the world against each other.
The winner of the competition was John Dethridge of Australia, beating out 20,000 other members of the TopCoder organization. So if you want to learn computer programming, I guess he would be the one to learn from.

good question - should there be a competition? a prize? most of them work in secret, many work in physical darkness and some in spiritual darkness as well (those ones are my favourites). None of them even have fresh milk for their coffee.
I say: they're busy bunnies on whom our modern world depends; let's get them out of their caves and lavish some limelight and luvvin on them. We could even have a reality TV show with only programmers on it... ah the mind boggiules...
