z = (18*y) +3
z = (17*y) +11

11-3 = 8
8 * 18 = 144
8* 17 = 136
144 + 3 = 147 (amount)
136 +11 = 147
so the amount is 147$

Come one guys, this is a quasi-trick question...you don't need long algebra and pen and paper to solve this.
Look at the clues the questioner gives....
1st each child given $18, 2nd time given 17 and the amount left increased by $8 which means there are 8 children.
So if 8 children were given $18=$144 and plus balance of $3, amount is $147 :)

Let x be the starting amount.
Let y be the number of children.

Our equations are:
x = 18y + 3
x = 17y + 11

Plug the x-value from the first equation into the second:
18y + 3 = 17y + 11

Grind through the algebra, and you get y=8.
Plug that back into the first equation, and you get:
x = 18*8 + 3 = 147.

The starting amount is therefore $147.

Simultaneous equations with 2 variables:

Let 'y' be the amount and 'x' be the number of children,

y = 18x + 3 ............... (1)

y = 17x + 11 ................(2)
______________________
Subtracting (1) from (2):

0 = -x + 8

=> x = 8;

Substituting value if x in (1),

y = 18*8 +3
=> y = 147

hence, required amount = $147.00

Let certain amount be x$
Let no. of children be y
1st case:
each child is given=18$
y no of children will get=18y$
the remaining amount=3$
therefore,
x-18y= 3-----(i)
2nd case:
each child is given=18-1=17$
y no of children will get=17y$
the remaining amount=11$
therefore,
x-17y=11-----(ii)
solving eqns. (i) & (ii)
we get,
x=147
THEREFORE, THE TOTAL AMOUNT=147$
