I am basically weeding my lawn which seems hopeless. what should I do?

Since cold weather is on the way, you should apply turf builder and also a pre-emergent (for those pesky springtime weeds that will come). Check with a garden center to see when these should be applied.

your first problem is most likely your only ongoing problem ; but i don't know where you live , but it sounds northern hemisphere .
i,d suggest the treatment of the lawn grubs is the way to go . having said that , please follow the manufacturers instructions . good luck.
