Many, many studies have shown that light drinking (1-2 drinks per day) is very healthy for most people---heart health, lowers chance of diabetes, etc.

I would say it depends on what you mean when you say "Moderate". (for instance),If your going out with your friends; you should choose 1 specific "spirits",that you will drink for the night (don't mix different alcoholic beverages). Because you don't know how long you will be in the club, then I'd suggest no more than 2-3 of your favorite beverage. Most night clubs will "water down" the alcohol, thus providing more liquor for the customers, (who eventually won't notice this). This is how getting drunk occurs. Your not tasting the alcohol, like you want,so you keep ordering more. The next thing you know, your drunk!. If your at a Tavern, where the drinks are not "watered down",then 2 shots is a good suggestion. If you have to do the driving, then try not to order "spirits" like Whiskey or Gin. These will get you "Higher-Faster". (Now) if your just "kick-in" back at the crib, then take it easy, and enjoy, but no matter where you are,the thing is to "Not get drunk". Your body will start to tell you immediately,if you've had too much to drink!. (Cheers!)

Really depends what you want the alcohol to "help". Drinking in moderation (less than 21 units per week for men and 14 units per week for women) is beneficial to things like blood pressure and heart function, but if you are trying to use it to blot out the real world that will not help at all. That will just give you a hell of a lot more problems in the long run.

What is a moderate quantity? To me it means that amount of alcohol needed to give me my cough medicine. To the town drunk, it means a much larger volume!
Both of us would say that our moderate amount "helps" but the other one has so many other problems as a result of trying to keep the DT's away.
