A building structure needs to be embedded in earth to give it stability. top soil is dug up to the level of rock or firm soil level is reached. this may be 3 feet or 10 feet depending on soil conditions. the foundation of the building is laid from that depth. the part of the structure from the pit bottom up to the ground level is called plinth. Plinth is the easiest part of the building to build. Plinth is also connected by cross beams connecting one pillar to the other to provide stability.

Within the context of construction, it is the top of the foundation walls. Usualy built of concrete block, or poured concrete at some height specified by local building codes, above flood line or grade (ground level). [The idea being that the foundation is in place and can not be moved. Physical evidence that the house is under construction.] Termite protection should be applied to the plinth level of the house. Wood frame construction is started on top of the plinth wall.
