Why can they not make up their own wording that does not conflict with United States Marriage laws, and have their own lifestyles run between themselves?
Why fight to overturn something that may never be allowed?
Why not think outside the box( no pun intended), and work on new legislation for new laws that do not conflict with existing ones?
Do they not know that if they continue on the course they are on now, soon it will be a law that being gay will be ILLEGAL?

Regarding your insurance company idea, that's great! There would be a significant market niche. The company could set up contracts for couples based on something similar to current marriage laws for the people who signed the policy. Here's a money-maker for some enterprising person that is sympathetic to the gay cause. And, it could also have a public health benefit by promoting monogamy.

From voting patterns that I have seen, this company would likely not be threatened by changes in the government's definition of marriage anytime in the next generation or two.

Any entrepreneurs out there? Anyone ready to start a co-op? Insurance is a very lucrative industry in the U.S. and gets much legal protection. Much of the real risk is covered by secondary insurance anyway.

Because alot of it is just smoke and mirrors, sadly, alot of the activists are not the ones that are the lawyers fighting it....they are just there to hold up there signs and be noticed, no offense but its the same with the abortion issues, now, how long has that war been going on, and how long do you thing it will continue with the same effects as your stating for the gay marriage rights....
