This is true. Not just when you see someone yawn, but also if you hear them yawn. I was sitting in an evening class earlier this week and heard a guy yawn in the back of the room (I sit in the middle.) Soon I yawned.

Some have a scientific thing to say for it, but I'd like to think if it's happening to people in the same room, under the same conditions, it's more related to the conditions of the room, and the next person unconsciously thinking it is okay to "release" their own yawn now too. Meaning, they've wanted to yawn, but suppressed it as best as they could and the body responds to the cue of another person yawning.

Pay attention and see if someone just joining the group will yawn after you do.
