They were pretty typical of british comedy of the time. But it is true that they were very racist and by today's very sensitive standards, very non p.c. (politically correct). To be honest though I never liked On the Buses or Love Thy Neighbour because they were just so lacking in any hope of bettering their non ending pedestrian lives. The humour was not clever, mostly toilet humour mixed with bigotry. The lives of the characters were dreary and uneventual to the outsider. Yet they were quite popular in their time so I guess they represented a large portion of the working populace's lifestyle. I would guess the humour was the sort born of those whose lives are full of one struggle after another. They were a form of british soaps, like say Eastenders....only humour (of a sort) was thrown in and the stories contained in each episode.
.
I do not remember Till Death Do Us Part, although I probably have watched it. But I would probably not have found it very funny. I never found Benny Hill particularly funny either. Occasionally he had an amusing sketch but largely it was the same sexist sterotyping over and over again. Not much intelligence involved in watching it..
.
On the positive side there have been great british sitcoms like One Foot in the Grave and As Time Goes By which are just so clever, witty and very amusing. They can be watched over and over again and still evoke the same enjoyment as the very first time. I suppose one of the reasons for this is because the characters do not remain static. Life changes around them and they are affected by these changes and adapt and grow accordingly. All with their particular characters own inimitable humour. More, to my way of thinking, an accurate portrayal of life as we all live it.

I find prgrammes such as On the buses and Love thy neighbour really ridiculous, who could like that kind of humour?? Its a real low intelligence comedy not to mention the fact that they were really sexist and racist, I guess most of the population have better taste now. I bet you liked Benny Hill and the Carry-ons as well didnt you?? HA ha SHAME ON YOU! Get an education.

All In The Family used to be a great program, and now I could imagine it being more controversial than it was back then, I think that even the women's groups with have a problem with Edith being called a Ding Bat.

Yes they were good funny sitcoms, (a little later on) all time fave was The young ones!! The scripts now would be so politicaly correct they'd be no humour left to add!!!

Talking of "Till death do us part", did you know that our Prime Minister (Tony Blair) is the son in law of "the scouse git" Tony Booth (He's Cherie's father.)

THEY WOULD ALL BE BANNED BECAUSE THEY ARE FULL OF RACIST REMARKS THATS WHY YOU DO NOT SEE ANY REPEATS OF THE PROGRAMS YOU MENTIONED AND IF THEY TONNED THEM DOWN THEY WOULD NOT BE AS FUNNY SHAME REALLY THEY WERE THE BEST COMEDIES AROUND
