they probably wouldn't give you a refund but may swap it for another if they have one, depends on the scrap yard and if you are a regular visitor there, and ask if you can return it if it don't work alot are very helpful because they would like future business from you

It depends on what you and the junk yard salesman agreed upon purchase. If there was no agreement, then you own it. If there was a verbal agreement but no written agreement, you own it. If the bill of sale states that if it don't work, you get your money back upon return, then you have a chance.

I wouldn't count on it, i think they would argue that it was sold as seen and un-tested. That said if you try and use a bit of charm they will probably let you exchange it.
Legally I guess if it was not fit for the purpose you should be entitled to a refund.
I think the first paragraph to be most relevent in practice.
