It depends on what you and the junk yard salesman agreed upon purchase. If there was no agreement, then you own it. If there was a verbal agreement but no written agreement, you own it. If the bill of sale states that if it don't work, you get your money back upon return, then you have a chance.

I wouldn't count on it, i think they would argue that it was sold as seen and un-tested. That said if you try and use a bit of charm they will probably let you exchange it.

Legally I guess if it was not fit for the purpose you should be entitled to a refund.

I think the first paragraph to be most relevent in practice.
