The Exorcist. I think it bit more at the core of human fear. It pulled you in and made you feel that something like this could actually happen to you. It was right there in your face, in the middle of the big city. The Shining being in an isolated place like it was actually turned it into a more isolated event by nature. Both were scary, but yeah, I have to vote for The Exorcist for IN YOUR FACE good and scary.

The Exorcist. The movie was better, but reading the novel was not so exciting
The Shining? Reading the novel was much better.Kept me awake the whole night 2 decades ago.The movie did not live up to the novel.

the exorcist scared me when i was young because the thought off possesion was very believable to me . not so much now. the shining, however, is extremely believable because i myself have suffered from a mild form of "cabin fever" and i now what tricks the mind can play on you. i dont go to much for the ghost part of the movie but no-one could have done a better job of playing the crazy jack than jack himself. all of stephen kings books are great and none of the movies made from them come close to being as good as the read itself!

the shining because thats a more psychopathic scary movie whilst the exorcist is more on the gory side...both are great movies but i prefer the shining
