Well...first I am an Indian, so I do have personal experiance. Second, personally, I think the main reason for the caste system being so strong in modern day India is because of Hinduism. The Hindu faith believes in reincarnation, and that if you do good deeds in your current life, you can move up to a higher caste. This is one of the central pillars of Hinduism. This pillar becomes obsolete if the ideas of casteism are destroyed. Many people could not stand the thought of the relgion of Hinduism becoming a smaller role in the lives of billions. I believe that is the reason that casteism is such a strong thing in India.

Casteism is strong in some part of India and this is basically related to the level and kind of education. Where the strong feeling of hatred is taught to the children in the family/ community, the children become bias in attitude unless exposed to real education. Unfortunately our political system has been deterioted to such an extent that many of our so called representetives owe their position to the hatred among communities. Real sanskars and exposure to a wider world will only bring about some changes.

In fact one should be proud only for whatever he/she has done and not for whatever he/she received as inheriatance. or birth in a particular family.(that will include, caste, religion, etc.)

We have yet to learn to be proud of self without hating other/s

I agree COMPLETELY with Joey. What he has to say is 100% the truth.

dr.b, there was no need for you to give such lovely facts about India, when it s being ruled by a bunch of ***holes and the public has no say in country matters. Discrimination of women, lets not even go there! I cant even imagine what the women are being put thru, no matter the advent of women. There are many women going up the ladder these days, but still, crime against women is still rampant... all this where people worship goddesses.

Caste system is a form of mental psychotic pleasure that the people up the system love to indulge in.

I am Indian by the way.

FIRST.....I challenge your assertion that 38% of the Drs. here in the USA are indian. Prove it, and NOT with some biased pro-Indian propaganda magazine which you couldn't even name!

SECOND....If India is such a paradise....why are all these "Dr's" here in the USA?

THIRD....I see you neglected to mention the shameful exploitation of children in India.....India's child labor is disgraceful.

FORTH...You seem to have overlooked India's staggering poverty and the system that passes on family debt from generation to generation.

FIFTH...Nowhere do you mention India's inaccessible education system. why is that?

SIXTH...In this "Indian paradise" you never mentioned "EVE TEASING".....a practice of the open unwanted touching of women in public places. A shameful practice which is degrading to women.

SEVENTH...What about the Indian practice of the poor and inhumane treatment of widows? Widows in India are blamed for their husbands death. In many cases the widow is FORCED to wear only unattravtive clothing and to SHAVE HER HEAD.
did you forget about this?

EIGHTH...The lack of public toilets...making public curbside urination and defacation an accepted practice. India has all this money and yet almost no public toilets.

NINTH....Unequal shares of inheritance. In most Hindu families only the SONS inherit the wealth, married daughters are no longer considered part of the family. Once again...discrimination of women.

Want me to go on?

So once again I'll ask.....if India is so great....why come here to the USA?

And WHY did you TOTALLY IGNORE the question of the caste system?
Because the caste system is a fact and alive and well in India!

Clean up your own back yard and it wouldn't be necesarry for so many Indians to come to the USA would it?

This is the basis of Hinduism. In Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna says that he has created four orders of the society calles castes.

1.Brahman
2.Kshatriya
3.Vaishya
4.Shudra.

This is the basis for casteism. Needless to say any more and i leave it to your imagination.

It would have changed with times but it was an easiest way for the colonials to keep the population divided and conquered. Prior to the colonial times, under most Indian kings/rulers, the caste system (being a religious ordination according to duties) was not abused for politico-economic gains.
