Probably part of the reason someone would like someone he or she isn't supposed to like is because it's "taboo." How to prevent it is to figure out exactly what it is one actually likes about the other, and think reasonably about why one isn't supposed to like the other. Just think realistically about it and figure it out.

Boy do I know about this. Avoid them or you will just want them more. And then you'll end up doing them, which will make you want to do them again. But this is easier said than done, and I wish you so much luck- I am going thru the same thing right now.

Do not spend time with them. When you are with who you are supposed to be with think about how special THEY are to you. When you are with the person you shouldn't like - think about what you DONT like about them.
Do not put yourself in situations where something could happen.
