Soccer is a contraction of "Association football"

All "pick up and run" versions of "football" derive from that game - William Webb Ellis picked up the ball while playing football at Rugby School and the game of Rubgy Football was created.

American football, Canadian Football, Aussie Rules Football all derive from Rugby Football.

EDIT

FAO opaalvare.....

In Latin America they call the throwing and running game Rugby ... Especially in Argentina

We still kick our football sometimes to make field-goals etc. So we just went with football

The goalie uses his hands to block the ball in "football" so we decided to call it soccer. j.k

We don't....we play football AND soccer over here....we happen to know the difference....we also play a sport called basket ball....why does it bother you what kind of sports we play and what we call them? Maybe you need to take up a sport and quit worrying about us.
