It uses a non standard 3" drive and I would like to fit a standard one as a back up to transfer all my data. I Like my PCW8256 much better than my PC for word processing

The PCW 8246? Surely you mean the PCW8256. Anyway, a very old machine - I used to sell and repair them back in the 80's. I didn't then see any standard 3.5" drives that would fit - Amstrad had their own specific parts for their machines, something like Dell these days. The only thing I can suggest is contacting Amstrad direct - www.amstrad.co.uk - although I think they stopped producing computers and components long ago.

When you talk about the PCW 8246 you are talking about something well outdated and it is very difficult to get the parts for them. I do not think the standard floppy drive will fit the connections will be different.

Look at the back connections on the original drive if the number of pins are the same as for a standard drive you may be lucky but I dont think they are

Sorry I may be wrong go here and check it out look under mounting 3.5 inch drives

There were quite a few 3.5" drive kits for the CPC, no idea if one ever got made for the PCW, but try searching around some of the companies and user groups, e.g. WACCI, SD Microsystems, etc.

Explain "non-standard". All drives meet standards, for interchangeability!
