Parallel universe or alternate reality in science fiction and fantasy is a self-contained separate reality coexisting with our own. This separate reality can range in size from a small geographic region to an entire new universe, or several universes forming a multiverse. While the terms "Parallel universe" and "alternate reality" are generally synonymous and can be used interchangeably in most cases, there is sometimes an additional connotation implied with the term "alternate reality" that implies that the reality is a variant of our own. The term "parallel universe" is more general, without any connotations implying a relationship (or lack thereof) with our own universe.

According to David Deutsch, parallel realities are the only way to resolve certain quantum--level phenomena involving wave--interference when light is shone through various pinholes.

The idea is that every possibility that can happen, DOES happen, somewhere. In this universe, I was born. In another, I would not be here. There would thus be a "multiverse" of all and infinite possible happenings.

parallell universes? - dunoo if this is a real definition of em, or just a sci-fi one, but whenever a a certain thing is chosen - by us, of by a bit of sand falling left after it's been kicked instead of right - a new universe is created, in which the other choice(s) happened.
so there would be an infinite number of these universes, some the same as ours except for that bit of sand, some where no galaxies were created....

Universes that are outside our own, but right next door.

One theory for the location of dark matter which gives our universe the gravity balance it needs is that the matter of parallel universe(s) allows the gravitation effects to be perceived in ours.

Gravity is the only phenomenon that can make the jump outside our spacetime to a parallel spacetime. Light, matter, energy are not allowed out, but gravity effects can make the journey.

A Parallel universe is an alternate universe to our own.
Some scientists think there could be many universes stacked against each other and you can enter them through a black hole.
