The only indisputable observations about the stolen attaché case recovered by Jules and Vincent are that its latch lock combination is "666", the "Number of the Beast" as given in the Biblical Book of Revelation, and that the contents of the case either glow yellow or are highly reflective. The only acknowledgements of its contents include the captivated stare of Vincent, the character called "Ringo" and his reaction, "Is that what I think it is?", and his response (to Jules saying "Uh-huh"), "It's beautiful." Whenever asked, director Tarantino has replied that there is no explanation for the case's contents: it is simply a MacGuffin (a plot device that motivates the characters and advances the story, but has little other relevance to the story). Originally, the Pulp Fiction case was to contain diamonds (stolen in the film Reservoir Dogs), but this was seen as too mundane. For filming purposes, the briefcase contained an orange lightbulb with a battery. Despite Tarantino's explanation, many theories have been proposed for the contents of the briefcase.[

I've heard a few rumours... One's, like whats previously mentioned, is Marcell Wallace's soul, another is Elvis' Jumpsuit can't remember where I heard it. The soul theory in undeniably the most obvious answer... It makes sense!!!

from snopes website:

What is the most beautiful thing about a person: his soul. Marsellus Wallace had sold his soul to the devil, and was trying to buy it back. The three kids in the beginning of the movie were the devil's helpers. And remember that when the kid at the end came out of the bathroom with a "hand cannon," Jules and Vincent were not harmed by the bullets. "God came down and stopped the bullets" because they were saving a soul. It was divine intervention.

(this theory supports the question about the bandaid on the back of his neck but, Snopes.com adds - Nowhere in the Bible is it stated that "when the devil takes your soul, he takes it from the back of your head.")

Originally the briefcase contained diamonds. But that just seemed too boring and predictable. So it was decided that the contents of the briefcase were never to be seen. This way each audience member would fill in the blank with their own ultimate contents. All you were supposed to know was that it was "so beautiful." No prop master can come up with something better than each individual's imagination. At least that was the original idea. Then somebody had the bright idea (which I think was a mistake) of putting an orange lightbulb in there. Suddenly what could have been anything became anything supernatural. Didn't need to push the effect. People would have debated it for years anyway, and it would have been much more subtle. I can't believe I'm actually talking about being subtle.

I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be Marcell Wallace's soul. I read this in a chat room once about 10 years ago. Note the band-aid on the back of Marcell's head in one scene that takes place after his wife's heroin overdose and before the incident with Bruce Willis in the pawn shop. I think the place where the band-aid is, portrays the spot where his soul was removed.

Marcellus Wallace's soul. I heard that on the radio..it was a movie trivia quiz. Apparently he sold his soul to get all of his power/influence, wealth and Mia.

Some people have said it's the main characters soul; but I think only Tarantino will ever know- and perhaps not even him.

Marsellus Wallace's Soul. (that was the rumor I heard, and if you watch it with that in mind, it works.)
