There are many different points in a person's sleep cycle when they experience dreams. Psychologists have studied this and have learned that Rapid Eye Movements (REMs) are a signal of dreaming - that's why you sometimes hear people talk about REM-sleep; also, if you wake people as soon as they start dreaming they'll eventually start to show signs of sleep deprivation even if they have as many sleep hours as they usually have. (If you keep a dog, you'll usually know when they're dreaming 'cos they're active in their sleep).
If we wake in the middle of a REM cycle we're still caught up in the experience of the dream and so we remember it. If we don't wake, chances are we won't remember the dream. So it's a matter of accident - you happen to be in a REM cycle when the alarm goes off.
(Anybody ever try to get back to sleep just to see how it ends? How frustrating!)

We constantly dream while we're sleeping. The dreams that we remember are those that happen before we wake up. The rest are just saved in our subconscious mind. Have you ever been in a situation where you feel that the things that's happening around you has happened before? It's "deja vu", because you might have dreamt of it before.

because probably most all your dreams are exiting but you only remember them if you wake up while they are happening. sometimes, when my alarm wakes me up in the middle of a dream, i put it on snooze and keep on dreaming the same dream, until it goes off again. Sorta makes me think that we also have a life inside our dreams, like something out of the matrix.
