I think it's because there is a part of all of us that wishes someone would come around to us and let us know that we aren't regular people. We like to think that we're special or meant for something more and Harry Potter plays into that. We can follow Harry and watch him do something that we wish we had.

Plus, the books are very well written and the author is really clever about how she does them.

It's meant to be children's series. For once, none of the books were skinny. Even as a child, I hated books that were finished all too soon. The Harry Potter books are involved and entertaining. I was surprised that people found it amazing that kids would read the text from front cover to back. Kids are not stupid and they love to read if you put a good book in front of them. When you do that, one kid will tell another about the book and so on and so on.

It's such a wonderful escape from the drudgery of reality but at the same time it deals with real life issues that we all face everyday such as prejudice and learning to live with the choices we make. It also teaches the value of true friendship and that first impressions are not always accurate.

Rowling's a wonderful plotter who writes simply stylistically, but still manages to create a complex world with round characters. It's an attractive combination.
