SO3 (subscript 3)
It is in a state where sulphur had a valency 6. The 3s2 electron of sulphur had gone to the vacant 3d orbital along with the 3px2 electon thus hybridising and combining with Oxygen. Not a very stable molecule as it is a bulky molecule.

hey which class are you in ? huh anyway the formula for sulphur tri oxide is SO3 where one atom of sulphur combines with 3 atoms of oxygen . actually sulphur can accept only 2 electrons at atime to get balanced but in the case of sulphur tri oxide it is not the case . since i do not know your level check some site for further details .

What Is Sulphur Dioxide (SO2)
Sulphur dioxide (SO2) is a colourless, non-flammable gas with the chemical formula, SO2 (also see sulphur and dioxide )
The chemical abbreviation for a molecule of sulphur dioxide is SO2
SO2 (sulphur dioxide), existing as single molecules , is a gas and is referred to as the molecular form of SO2.
In aqueous (water) solutions, such as grape juice and wine, SO2 can exist as bound SO2 (BSO2) and free SO2 (FSO2).
triox is SO3 as in tri = three? simple huh...
