As far as I know, the lanolin in the wool while on the sheep's back, makes the majority of the water roll off. On the other hand, if rain was hot and contained detergent there would be a lot of soggy sheep about in undersized coats.

Great (though sheepish) question. Sheep are usually bathed using Woolite so that they will make more sweaters. Actually, to shrink the wool must be woven (into yarn and cloth). Hot water causes certain hairs (wool) to curl more because they are ovalic in cross-section. Many hygrometers (humidity detectors) use a single strand of ovalic hair that changes length in proportion to the humidity present.

Wool, like hair, even as connected to the floor of the residing body is fed through blood vassals. this enables the wool to strengthen and develop. once the wool has been removed from that's existence source, and that's no longer dried remarkable after being made moist, then it shrinks.

Wool is to sheep what hair is to humans, They are actually covered with skin (not wool) so irrespective of the shrinking tendency, since the skin of sheep is intact the sheep does not shrink.
