Politicains continue to bring out well meant but stupid legislation to make life difficult for good tradespeople whilst the cowboys still carry on. Why dont they have to conform to approval by overpriced and officious accreditaion bodies.

They make the rules.

That's basically it, they make the rules and as such can get away with a lot more than anyone else can.

If politicians were held personally liable, they would never make a decision - good or bad - for fear of the potential consequences. Everyone is capable of making mistakes and, believe it or not, legislation can be amended or repealed. You may also like to consider the very many good examples of legislation such as the health and safety at work act and regulations concerning electricity, gas and water supply.

I do share your concerns about accreditation bodies as this seems to me to be a tax on genuine tradespeople and not a means of preventing cowboys.

I think, the real issue is, how does the construction industry get rid of the cowboys? Sadly, when a tax paying, qualified builder prices a job and is undercut by a fly by night cowboy, the householder only sems to think of the money saved and not the quality.

The reason the cowboys do not conform is that they are not genuine and only want to make a fast buck. Why should they conform in the circumstances?

A good idea...But how do you get the yahoos who legislate to make this a reality? And what would be the professional standards to which they are held accountable--lying in everything they say, seeking to line their pockets, making exceptions for their friends, making war rather than peace? How about also making it mandatory that all presidential candidates be tested psychologically, and so eliminate the psychpaths and other nut cases?

Maybe, maybe someday in the distant future we'll come to this point and "politics" will be a professional activity. Maybe someday we'll have an accreditation body, which even if officious would be better than what we have now. Maybe...

Study the Party Wall Act 1996 and all will be revealed.
It's a gravy train.

These so called skilled papers are just that.

Stupid isn't the word for it.
Trained to design and run, Power Stations, Transformers and Transmission Lines, I have to employ a newcomer to fix my domestic supply.
I don't have a valid permit.
However the Government wouldn't hesitate to call on my skills in times of emergency like Korea.
Sorry, I haven't got the NVQ or whatever its called wouldn't work then would it?

It's simple they make the laws of this country that is why the first thing they always do is give themselves a pay rise well above inflation, then award themselves massive pensions and basically look after themselves......they consider themselves to be above the rest of us and certainly wouldn't want to be restrained by laws that were designed for us 'riff-raff' who voted for them.
Personally though I would like to see Tony Blair arrested for war crimes and for defrauding the british people but whats the point he'd probably only get an asbo for it anyway

Nice thought, never going to happen. With a tradesman the quality of his/her work is evident. With politicians it is more subtle. The real problem is who would decide who is doing a good job? You cannot get 2 people on the street to agree on political issues. Therefore what you consider a bad job, I might consider a great job and vice versa. Politicians are held accountable by the only means possible, it is called elections. If enough people are unhappy he/she losses their job.

Unfortunately it is a thing in Constitutional Law called 'Parliamentary Privelidge'. They are protected from their incompetence by law unless it is so serious that it could be seen a criminally negligent. Normally they would just resign though.

Yes, I agree. It is wrong but that is how they continually get away with it.
