My father recently died of cardiac arrest (heart attack). I am curious if it is painful when it happens. I hate the thought that he died painfully. I just want to know for peace of mind whether it is or not. I have read and looked it up. But nothing says if it is painful or not for the patient. Most of the inquiries say they just collapse into unconsciousness and stop breathing. I want to know do they feel it? I know there is chest pain but I do not know if my dad experienced that first or prior to the attack. Do they know just before it happens or not? Just would like to know. I doubt I will get a good answer probably a bunch of people being rude but I can't call my doctor yet its the weekend haha. Thanks anyway.

My condolences to you for the loss of your father. It is my thought that while he may have had some chest discomfort initially, suffering a massive MI ( myocardial infarction) there is such damage caused to the heart that death is nearly instantaneous. Thus pardon my blunt statement but he probally did not even feel himself hitting the ground so to speak.

Just to clarify every dies of cardiac arrest... that is just a medical term used when the heart stops beating.

Cardiac arrest or myocardial infarction can be painful, but it is not always painful.
A lot of times the person can continue on with what they are doing and they don't even notice
Sorry to hear about that.
Just try to be thankful that your father is not lingering on after the heart attack and suffering in that kind of way. That would probably be the more painful of anything, mentally and physically.
He is not suffering anymore and he's in a much better place than you or I.

when you first go into cardiac arrest it is painful, but u gradually become out of it, so u dont feel a thing. you become unresponsive and dont know what is going on. so generally he did not die a painful death. 75% of cases you do feel chest pain, others feel palpatations which do not hurt. Palpatations are the pumps of the heart, you can feel the heart pumping and the heart rate speeds up.

I am of the opinion that It is difficult to say because most of the the patients doesn't survive cardiac arrest and whoever survives normally doesn't remember the event because he or she was unresponsive during that event

I guess it would depend on how quickly your father passed after the heart attack started. I'm sorry about your dad.

I'm sorry, but I would imagine it would be quite painful. However, it is quite quick, most of the time.

I am very sorry for you loss.
