Fiberglass is a thin mesh that becomes transparent when a liquid is applied over the mesh. They are then cured with a UV light. Little to no filing (and dust) These are the thinnest and most realistic looking BUT are also the most fragile / easily broken. Most expensive too.

Gel nails are where they apply the gel over your natural nails or tips and cured also with a UV light. The gel producess a high gloss finish which is good if you don't want to wear a nail polish. Although these have deeper ridges when your natural nail grows in.

Acrylic nails are applied with a brush, powder & liquid. They are not transparent and don't look good without nail polish. There is A LOT of filing and A LOT of dust. They are the cheapest to have done and are also the thickest and most unnatural looking but are also the most durable. These also tend to "lift" and pop-off where the other types do not do this. With the lifting, there is a greater risk of moisture getting underneath the overlay and can cause a fungus. There is also a lot of filing/buffing of your natural nail to roughen it up (which causes your natural nail great damage) to make the acrylic adhere to your natural nail. I worry about the product they use because every shop you go into they always wear masks!!!

With all types of artificial nails you have to have them filled in because of natural nail growth. You go for a "fill-in" about every two weeks.

I've tried all of these and my favorite was the gel nail although I did love the fiberglass. I found that I was too hard on my nails to be able to keep them from breaking with the fiberglass. Also, with the fiberglass they tend to burn when being applied. The nail tech has to tap your nail to take away the burning sensation which is fire hot!
