He was laughing and joking.
And i don't care how much was raised for the airambulance in his name.
To ferry this muppet to the bupa hospital cost thousands of pounds of taxpayers money.

The money was raised by the public so the airambulance can carry out the excellent work they do.
Its not a bupa airambulance its a public airambulance, and when does bupa ever use helicopters to ferry laughing patients to one of their hospitals.
It seems to me muppet hammond thought they owed him.

He can't have brain damage because he hasn't got one.
I would of thrown him out of the helicopter on his hamster head.

Richard Hammond Helicopter

Cost.
I expect BUPA paid.
Last time he went in one folk donated £ 150 000.
Much of the Air Ambulance cash comes from donations
They thought if they gave him a lift to Bristol folk might donate some more, they were probably right. I certainly hope so for all those folk who might survive heart attacks if there were air ambulances to take them to the nearest surviving hospital after their local hospital has closed under new Labours health cuts,
However Richard Hammonds life insurance company looks set to save a fortune if he survives whereas most heart attack victims are uninsured, the state will save on pensions and benefits if they die and they will die some time anyway so it makes little difference whether the costs are paid now or later.
That is why Richard travels by air ambulance whereas if you mr ordinary Labour voter want help it dont arrive in time and you get transported in the funeral directors Bedford CF van.
You see there aint no shortage of people, per se, Some 25 year old Pole could do my job better than me after a couple of weeks training, so if I has a car crash its best for the nation if I die and they save paying me a pension in 15 years time, for which I have paid for 30 odd years, bit hard if I aint injured I know.
But Hammond is talented, and a whole lot of hangers on will be on the dole if he cannot return to Top Gear. Economics.
My 10 year old son understands this, are you a bit thick perchance

The helicopter flew Hammond to an air port (presumably Leeds Bradford) where he was flown by a small plane to Bristol.

I imagine it was part of a publicity stunt on behalf of Yorkshire Air Ambulance just like the "The donations for Richard allowed us to buy a new helicopter" statement. The helicopters would cost several million to purchase and not the £150k that was raised for Hammond.

Why is everybody so excited over a second-class minor 'celebrity' who gets himself involved in a stunt that went wrong?
It's been on every bloody news programme this week, and I'm sorry, with all of the things happening in the world today, HE IS NOT NEWS and I seriously think it's time we forgot about him as a news item.
As for who pays for all this transport and hospital care, I suspect that he's well insured for that sort of thing both privately and by the TV company responsible for making the programme, so it's not coming out of YOUR pocket any more than it is mine. If he was going to a BUPA hospital then obviously WE'RE not paying for his treatment...and all this nonsense with the TV interviewers telling us that the hospital he was being taken to had specialists Doctors, nurses, physios and other staff - I should hope they have too - IT'S A BLOODY HOSPITAL !!! What else did they expect to find there - Chitty Chitty Bang Bang being performed twice daily with a matinee on Wednesdays and Saturdays?
I say give us all a rest from these "z" list celebs who get themselves into bother.
Having said all that, let me make it clear that I wish NOBODY any harm, it's just that I don't want it rammed down MY throat all the time thank you.

the answer to this question is quite simple leeds (general infirmary is not a private hospital by the way) he was transported by helicopter because bristol is 5 hours away in an ambulance or 4 hours away in a car and he has suffered some very nasty injuries they would have done the same for anyone else if it was required for them to move hospitals. also he is a member of bupa so leaving him in the lgi would actually cost you more of your precious money. and anyway his family have just raised enough money to buy a new helicopter for the sheffield area so if anyone has a right to travel in it i'd say it was him

I don't know if you are aware of this but Richard Hammond alone has raised over half a Million Pounds for the Air-Ambulance service and I think that entitles him to travel on one for free.
Since his accident other people have donated thousands of pounds, and if anything some good has come out of this.

I don't believe that any tax payers' money was used for this transport - or the first one. And certainly none of the contributions to the air ambulance service.
Many countries have private health schemes, and many Brits pay for private health insurance. Particularly those in high-risk jobs and those who travel abroad on a regular basis. The snag in the UK is that you cannot opt out of the NHS. This means that if you pay for private health insurance, you still have to pay NHS contributions, which I understand are salary linked.
Find someone else to pick on.
