Ummmm you are stretching my memory here, it's been a long time. Perhaps you need a 'bi-directional printer' cable for dot matrix? Not all cables are.

If the printer goes through the motions then it will be adjusting the pressure. Most dot matrix have a pressure adjustment on them. If not then it will be software related. As well check all connection and make sure the printer is selected when you print a document.

are you sure that spooler service is enabled? go to Services and see if it's enabled or not
