Depends on which car industry you're talking about. If its Ford or another American company, it probably will disavow any knowledge of gas actually being depleted. If its Toyota, Honda or BMW they've already worked on and produced cars that run purely on electricity or are extremely fuel efficent.

There has to be some way. Many car companies like Honda have developed methods of utilising non-conventional energy sources like solar energy and even water. There is now a Honda commercial showcasing thier water-powered car.
But the catch here is that these are not cost effective (at least for the present). Any way, there will be alternatives (of which some may be even better than petroleum) in the future

It's already doing it.
We have cars that run on solar energy. We have have cars that run on electric batteries. And there are a few that run on recycled waste.
(not human waste)
And besides - the liklihood of the Earth running out of oil is very far off. We will have flying vehicles by then, that will probably be powered by some other natural resource.

The industry is sophisticated and inventive where the answer is,- it is ready to build when that moment arrives.
You must remember the power unit is one small part of a machine and probably the most developed unit in a car.
The question is when and that depends on the competition where the trail blazer often gets burned.
Technically any carbohydrate will burn and that includes your cocoa drink or flour for your bread. There's the sewerage plant down the road or the landfill sites.
Fuel is everywhere

There are many alternate fuel sources in existence to date however most of which the technology patents have been purchased or acquired by the oil producing companies to prevent release. They are interested in revenue and will spare no expense to insure the price of their product. As the worlds' oil sources and reserves dwindle these same companies in order to guarantee future profits will develop and perfect the same technologies they've kept from the market. Example: Did you know there are carburetors in existence who's efficiency is in excess of 100 miles on one gallon of gas? Of course the oil industry can not allow this technology to ever reach practical widespread application as this would crush the demand for their product. The real question is when do unethical practises such as this become illegal and warrant government intervention? Imagine the positive impact such devices would have on our environment. It is a criminal act in my opinion.

Go electric.
But trust me, when the earth runs out of oil, cars will be the last thing on our minds.

Something certain motor companies are already doing is converting to hyrogen power. Afterall it is the most abundant element in the universe. Not only that but it is clean burning as well. The technology consists of a hydrogen reactor which would probably seperate the hydrogen from the oxegen in water which would be the fuel. The only emissions would be oxegen. One cup of water is enough to power four rooms for twelve hours. Did you know that our sun is powered by hydrogen.

there are already alternatives to fossil fuel to power cars such as methane (a bit smelly) or hydrogen powered cars i put my money on hydrogen because its an infinitly renewable source with tremendous power out put all you would have to do is drive into a hydro-staion and re-charge your cylinder.
petrol companys have had this technology available for years but they buy the copyrights so they can continue to rape our planet and make more money its disgusting when you think about the reality of this but what can we do??

May I be permitted to remind you of the oft rumoured suppression of fabled genius inventions of internal combustion engines that run on water (or other cheap substitutes). Of course this is conspiracy theory you may say but we are still trying to legaly prove that tobacco manufacturers deliberately suppressed the known dangers of smoking so that they could continue in business... no sane person believes that "conspiracy" did not / does not exist.
So draw your own conclusions.
