The characters do change a lot. Brock came and left and then came back. Basicaly the story is about Ash and Picachu, the other characters come and go. Misty is still friends with Ash but she follows her own path, it's like when one of your best friends moves house.

Don't you remember a few seasons back, she resolved her issues with her other two sisters who owned that water gym, so she decided to join them in their tournaments and the owning of that gym. It's totally true and I'm not giving you a lie or making fun of the show or you, Honestly.
