check power options in the control panel, you can select what happens when you press the power button (shutdown, hibernate etc) and suspend or hibernate sometimes cause problems

well, if your shutting it down that way (which you shouldnt) then you'll actually need to 'hold' the power button in till it completely shuts down. Usually about 3-4 seconds. If it freezes on power-UP, then it sounds more like a hard drive, settings (press F8 or a partition issue (see ur windows disk). But if it is happening at power-up, the best thing to do is hit F8 and start in safe mode. Then try to perform a system restore or restore to a previous version that worked. (really need more information here). I tried.

Why are you pressing power in the first place? Are you trying to shut down your computer or restart it?

I think if you hold the power button for 4 seconds, the comptuer should automatically power off.
