yes he did the Emancipation Proclamation but should that over shadow every thing he did wrong

1 he forced the south into the civil war. the south had every right to leave the country if they chose to. that's what the whole war of Independence was for. to say they weren't is to spit on their graves. but any way he knew the south couldn't have a fort in their biggest and most important port. filled with Union troops it would have cut the south in half and they told him not to resupply it or it was an act of war and he did it any way forcing the south to fire the first shot

2.like institute an unfair draft mostly immigrants were chosen for that draft or the poor that couldn't afford the 300 dollar buy out

3The most blatant abuse of Lincoln's power was his suspension of habeas corpus. The suspension of this constitutional guarantee, by which a person could not be imprisoned indefinitely without being charges with some specific crime

Lincoln found powers in the constitutional clause making him "Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy of the United States, and of the militia of the several states." He said that because of this clause, he had the right to use any means necessary to defeat the enemy. With this justification, he issued many executive orders before Congress even convened. Lincoln summoned the militia, ordered a blockade of the Confederacy ports, expanded the regular army beyond its legal limit, and directed government funds before congressional allocation. of these powers were granted to him in the Constitution.

Lincoln was correct, in fact, he interpreted the Constitution in the same manner as the South.

The South did not want to keep slavery in their existing states, they wanted to expand it into territories. The was wasn't fought over slavery, but over the right of settlers in territories like Missouri and Wisconsin, etc. to extend slavery across the continent.

The nation was sovereign, not the states. If the South had seceded, it would have failed and petitioned to rejoin the Union within 10 years. If not that, it would be a third world country by now, and the remaining US would be 10 times stronger for not having to keep and support their backaward asses.

Obviously, your bias against Lincoln and the causes and effects of the time, is misguided. Lincoln's 1st and only objection was to hold the Union together, no matter what it took. Do you think Stalin took uneccessary rights against his people to save the Soviet Union? Linclon did what he had to do and suffered greatly both politically and personnally, and had he not, the Union would have been split, and North America would not have become the powerful world influence that it became.
