Does liberalism have a tendency to give rise to nationalism or fascism?

I am currently in a political science course :)

And this is a question we are discussing.

And i wanted some opinions on the issue...

I guess i should rephrase the question..

Is liberalism, by it's very nature, always in danger of giving rise to illiberalism - be it an extreme nationalism or fascism?

And i am not getting you guys to complete this assignment for me. Or to do my homework for me. I just have no idea where to start. And i'll understand the issue better if i can get opinions and different view points. Consider all your comments copyrighted by yourselves because that's not my intention.

Liberalism will not lead to Nationalism or Fascism. Extreme Liberalism would lead to complete chaos. There would be no control other than each individuals beliefs and personal moral standards. What little law would be almost impossible to enforce due to the limited power of police to enforce it. The answer is in the middle ground of liberalism and extreme conservatism. Moderates. Someone who cares about the individual but also protects the society in which the individual must exist. The welfare of BOTH need protected

No. Liberalism leads to capitalism. Going to the extreme of liberalism, you have a government that regulates (but does not control nor run) the economy closely and provides for freedoms through rule of law as well as government support programs to maintain equality and a basic way of life.

Fascism is an extremist government that borrows heavily from conservative ideals of tradition, provides no guarantee for freedoms, and places the nation above all else.

Go take an intro to political science course at a university.

Jimmy Carter was the last real liberal to achieve the office of POTUS. He made a hash of it. That is why Dukakis and Mondale and Kerry were not able to overcome the voting publics concern about their positions. The burnt children fear the fire!

The whole country is dangerous when you have no unity - no connection to our common humanity for each other.. Politics sucks, because all it ever talks about is the political differences between us... Nodboy ever talks about the stuff we have in common.
