I 'm not really qualified in the paper sense, but have years of experience. I have run my own business, worked in various fields but just seem to get turned down at every turn. Am I doing something wrong, what chances have i at 55 to earn a decent wage. I have already been caught by a mailing system working at home and have lost £20 to them. Have registered will e mail job opportunities, still no luck

If you're any good you can work for me.
I don't care about your age or your colour, just as long as you have talent and really want to work.

Sounds like you should stop looking for employment in the work from home, mail and e-mail scams.
Do you have a resume?
At the age of 55 you might have to start another business. I can think of many ways to generate income with a pickup truck. Maybe turn a hobbie into a business.
Relocate?

Me too! What is meant by paper sense are you legally able to work on you're place of residense. or do you not have workng papers if that the problem then join the crowd of undoumented persons trying to find work to survive. But there are alwat the places where the undocumented meet and do hard hanyman jobs for a pittence and with that still try to make ends meet to pay for thier legal paper"s it is a very long proccess .And no you are not to old there are people in thier later sixty's working.

I would say job searching is quite a frustrating experience, I once know someone who took half a year to get a new job. So just don't give up, frankly saying age could be a problem but as long as you have skills and expertise you could still find a job you fit in. Move on and try hard!!!

Try Asda and Sainsbury's they do recruitment drives for people over 55, as it is deemed that the more mature employee, is more dedicated, better time keeping, is less likely to let you down at short notice, having been an employer in the past, this is true, I would rather the more mature than the young.

As long as your in the UK, employers from tomorrow (1st October) will not be able to discrimate against you on any ground for your age, so from then on, the only discrimination availiable to employers is your lack of paper qualifications.
You might want to do a home course or see if an employer will allow you to be subsidised to have an evening college course on something that is beneficial for the company.

I can imagine it being hard. Think of it this way, if you owned a company and you had to appoint someone to a job, would you go with the 20yr old who can work for another 40 years, or a 55yr old who will work till 60 and then retire.. ? The problem is alot of 55yr old starts to settle in their jobs and wait for retirement to come... Not performing as good as the younger guys

From tomorrow the new Age Discrimination Law comes into effect so employers cant refuse you a job simply because of your age.
Keep looking, Monster, fish4 jobcentreplus are all good job hunting sites for the UK.
Stay away from home working, they are all scams as you have found.
Dont give up.
