Metal is a branch of hard rock. All metal is rock but not all rock (even hard rock) is metal.
Metal centers around very strong guitar and percussion, with much emphasis upon electronic distortion (but especially highly amplified distortion). The guitar playing is typically heavy in rapid tapping and sweep-picking. Almost all use loudness as a tool.
Traditional heavy metal bands include: Black Sabbath, Blue Oyster Cult, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and Steppenwolf.

Hard rock in general is a little bit more softer, such as Kiss, Iron Maiden, Girlschool ... Judas Priest, Cradle of Filth, Jetson and Flatsom (sp?), old skool Metallica are in general considered as 'metal'. Again, many many branches in 'Metal', but in fact, hardrock is just a 'branch' of it.
