You turn out kids who are fluent in 2 languages. It is easier for them to get a job and it helps with SAT and ACT scores in the language portion because of similar roots, etc. They usually have an increased vocabulary and a better understanding of words in both languages.

There are a lot of advantages
Advantages; You have a kid that comes from a third world country whose first language is not English. He doesn't properly read it, write it or speak it. How is a teacher supposed to teach this student English? By having a bilingual educator the student benefits by understanding his/her language and learning a new one.
At the same time the child could get bored or overloaded. It's going to take some time and effort to teach the child.
When we came to this country in '86 my mother put me in a monolingual class. I had enough of a good background on spanish, I was 8, to retain my language and learn a new language without forgetting my native tongue. My brother on the other hand wasn't. But he suffered because of it. He is fluent in reading and writing but cannot speak spanish. He is fluent in English though.
I think if you have the support of the parents then anything is possible.
