Okay, I personally build my own computers, but that is not the best option for everyone. I have found nowadays that you only save a good deal of money when you are building high end computers. For example it would be hard to build an a computer equivalent to an $800 Dells for cheaper, but you can save a lot if building one equivalent to a $2500 Dell.
Now for components:
Processor - Right now the best out is the Intel Core 2 Duo.
RAM - get at least 1GB, 2 if you wanna spend a little more
Hard Drive - get at least 160 GB, 320 if you use a lot of big files
Video Card - if you wanna play a lot of games, get a high end one, else get a mid range one
Sound Card - get a fancy sound card only if you are a sound buff
If you want even more detail, e-mail me with a price range and a list of specific things you wanna do with the computer.

Building your own would be the best option, as you get a LOT more bang for you buck. Other than that, the most simple advice is to buy the best parts you can afford. As mentioned above, you should make sure to get a powerful graphics card and processor, as well as at least 1gb of RAM, more if you can afford it. A decent sound card would be a good idea too, although it doesn't really have to be absolutely top-notch.

First you should have lots of memory 1gb and above, corsair would be a nice brand for memory.....
since its only for home entertainment not that much processor speed you can choose between AMD or INTEL...
a high end video card would be also a very good choice for great video quality ATI or NVIDIA... 256 mb and above would be enough..
a creative sound card would be a very good choice... soundblalster or XIFI sound cards.... great speakers such as Altec, Bose, Creative.....
a SATA harddrive... Seagate is the brand of choice maybe 250 gb is enough for lots of storage space for your musics, videos, etc....
Motherboard thats supports SATA harddrive... brand of choice is Gigabyte, MSI, or Asus.....
A nice monitor for videos.. such as LCD, i recommend 19 inch or bigger for better viewing of vidoes... Samsung syncmaster, LG, or Viewsonic or DELL......
hope i could helped... :)

bypass to Cyberpower,Inc. There you may customize a activity device and that they are going to build it for you. i offered 2 from them final 3 hundred and sixty 5 days. offered my spouse a pc with a video card in it(not a gamer yet hate sluggish laptop's.) besides I enjoyed hers lots i offered me one too; a gamer laptop. i offered an AMD quad-middle 9850, 2 gigs ram( I extra 2 extra gigs later) i offered a low-priced video card from them and adjusted it with a stronger one at a stable fee from Newegg. ATI 3870 is the style-89 funds- its a stable midrange card. 320 gig confusing rigidity with sixteen mb cache.Mobo MSI K9A2CF-i might now spend the extra 50 greenbacks and get the Platinum if I have been given a do over. Mine expenses intense on speed. in case you get quite intense get a mobo that helps swifter ram say 1600. all the different issues are optionally available counting on what you like and might have adequate funds.
