Also I can't afford to repaint with Kilz.
the carpets have been cleaned but still have an odor.Any suggestions are greatly appreciated,(and no moving is not an option.) Thanks!

Get a couple of bowls and pour vinegar into them. Vinegar tracks the smoke to it and u will be able to see the black or darker film in it. Raise the windows let the fresh air in, Fabreze until u can't do it anymore or anything that was there before u moved in. Also get a odor neutralizer air freshener to help. If this doesn't work speak to the landlord about it.

Sounds as if the odor might be coming from the cushion under the carpet. Fabreeze products works great at getting rid of odors, also you might consider an air purifier if the smell is persistent.

A lemon cut in half & left is supposed to clear up unwanted smells,also try leaving windows open for a full day plus wash lace curtains & maybe use some pot pourri or spray like Dettox .

I have seen this question on here before and remember that someone said to set bowls of apple cider vinegar around your house and I have also read that bowls of onions sliced in half will do the same thing....I have used the vinegar,(works) but not the onion method... Good luck

Get an air purifier plus ionizer. Switch it on for a few hours, all those smells will be gone. Try 'airsource' from shaklee.

charcoal and cokecan absorb smell
look out for solid odour adsorbents in the market very cheap and effective
