There is no minimum distance except the atmosphere or hitting the earth. It is only a question of velocity. The closer to the earth the higher the velocity relative to the surface of the earth.

If you want to get super technical about it, the minimum distance is not equal to or less than the height point of terrain along your trajectory.
It doesn't even matter if you hit the atmosphere or not so long as you can keep whatever you are orbiting moving at the right velocity. If you're really low, however, that's going to require more power than any contained system we could design.

If you built a vacuum tube underground, you could actually orbit the Earth at negative distance.
In practical terms, anything below 120 miles and the air would be slowing you down too much to stay up long.

there are 3 diff types of orbits.
Low Earth Orbit (LEO) - Geocentric orbits ranging in altitude from 0 - 2,000 km (0 - 1,240 miles)
Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) - Geocentric orbits ranging in altitude from 2,000 km (1,240 miles) - to just below geosynchronous orbit at 35,786 km (22,240 miles). Also known as an intermediate circular orbit.
High Earth Orbit (HEO) - Geocentric orbits above the altitude of geosynchronous orbit 35,786 km (22,240 miles).

there is a minimum, distance, I believe when one hits the final part of the atmosphere possibly the Ionosphere at around 250 miles up you can obtain orbitthe lack of gravity is what allows you get there and then you need something to help you maintain it once ur there
