get him to hospital now, my son has exact same symptoms my own doctor said he just had cold, breathing gets worse he has pneumonia and needs to be on a nebulizer and very Strong antibiotics. if he is breathing fast his lungs are not getting enough oxygen and sends his heart rate up which is not good in a child. my son was in hospital for one night and only last night and today has started to get bad again i will give him until lunch time and if no better i am going straight back to hospital don't mess around with child's health.

could be a couple of reasons, one could be pneumonia, and if so that means there is fluid in his lungs and it is taking up space so less oxgyen is able to move around. secondly it could be a temp. if his temp is greater than 100 degrees farenheit, it can also cause rapid breathing. by breathing fast it helps the body to lower the temp. if he his dehydrated this can also cause increased respirations. whatever it is you should bring him to the doctors. any respirations over 20 breaths per minute is consider fast. his body is trying to compensate for whatever is ailling him. good luck

Possible chest infection and or bronchitis. Mucus in lungs depleting capacity and performance. Could just be that when he coughs he has hurt himself (slight pull in chest muscles or wrench in oesophagus). If he breathes quick it may not hurt as much.

Could also be mild asthmatic.

Get him to the quacks for a check up ASAP.

Your lung capacity, the room your lungs have to breath, is reduced during a cold, small children have a small capacity so their breathing speeds up if their lung capacity is reduced. Having said that, don't self diagnose a small child, make sure a Dr does it!

Possibly because he can't take a full breath due to fluid accumulation. That is a question for a real doctor, I'm only slightly trained in respiratory therapy.

Not 100% sure but it could be that his lungs have fluid in them and the reduced capacity for air intake it causing him to speed up breaths... could also be restricted airflow in the throat due to swelling from coughs

Congestion in the lungs which means less surface for air to move. Faster breathing is the body's response to get enough oxygen.
