I don't think anyone can turn down missing because who wants to be missing? I'd turn that down too.

Why question phrases? That doesn't accomplish anything.

Ha-Ha. Good question! Although I have heard it said so many times, not to mention having it happen to me so many times, it is fairly obvious what the phrase is supposed to mean. But, until I read your question, I never thought to try to make sense of the literal meaning. That's amusing!

Of course nothing can physically and literally "turn up missing". I'm sure that whoever coined that phrase was trying to express the fact that something had become lost or misplaced, but had very poor grammar or a very poor grasp of the English language.

I have never heard the phrase "turn up missing," but it does seem contradictory. While there might be some instances where the phrase might work, it seems unlikely that another choice of words would not be much better.

However, while we are on the subject why does the phrase "turn up" mean found?
