jumped up out of bed and couldn't stand on that leg for minutes. I could literally feel (with my hand) the muscle moving up and down in my calf -- I thought I had something crawling inside calf that was how big lump was. Worse pain in life - how I can get it not happen again? Hours later muscle still sore! I am doing alot more walking than I was a month ago, could that be reason why it happen during sleep?

Leg cramps ("Charlie horse") are painful muscle spasms in the legs that usually occur at night. Dehydration, excessive exercise (like you described), and use of diuretic ("water pills") medications may trigger or worsen leg cramps.

If you get another one, stretch slowly, then massage your leg while pointing your toes upward. Stand up and gently put pressure on the affected leg. Also, cold or warm packs may help.

To help prevent these in the future, try daily stretching before bed. While standing, place hands on the wall, heels on the floor, lean toward the wall while bending one knee, and hold this position for 10 seconds. Repeat with the other knee. Repeat 5-7 times with each side. Also make sure to keep well hydrated -- 6-8 cups of fluid per day. Make sure some of the fluids contain Electrolytes (e.g., sports drinks). Vitamin E (400 I.U./day) has been reported to help prevent leg cramps as well.

Keep in mind that if your leg cramps occur while walking, this may mean there are blockages of the arteries of the legs. If you have this symptom, see your doctor soon.

I get these at least 2 times a month, where it hurts in the place where you got the charlie horse for the whole day, sometimes longer. I read in a natural healing book that eating a banana before bedtime will help it not to happen (I try to eat a half of one every night, when I remember). I think it is the potassium from the banana that keeps you from getting them. I get them usually when my knees are bent and I stretch out while sleeping, in the back of my calf. Not fun at all...hope you find what you're looking for. Good luck!

leg cramps, your muscle feels like its moving and goes into a tight ball. You think that the muscle is trying to remove itself from your leg? i had it on a plane once bloody kills. Cramp has something to do with lack of salts, so keep your salt levels high and it will minimise the chance of a reoccuraance. Most people get it in their lives and the pain will settle down after a day or two. Jus watch out if your swimming out of your depth and never swim alone as it has been known to cause death via drowning! x

Take a cacium-magnesium-zinc pill with each meal daily, and a multiple vitamin-mineral tablet daily. I have had good results recommending this to people who complain of cramps.
