One trick that often works for me is to count backwards from 1000--by *sevens*. Counting by ones, twos, and even threes doesn't *quite* keep my mind occupied enough to shut down the busy thoughts that are keeping me awake. Whatever is involved in doing the math to subtract 7 from each previous number seems just challenging enough. I very rarely get below 900, and almost *never* get below 800, before dropping off to sleep.
If I still can't sleep, I get out of bed and try to take some action toward resolving what's bothering me--even just to write about it in my journal, or research some aspect of it online.
And if no specific thing is bothering me, I just try to put the time to some constructive use by doing some quiet "chore"--cleaning out a drawer, or filing the papers on my desk. It's important that it be quiet so that I'm not agitating myself further. Sometimes the activity will help me feel sleepy (I'd sure rather sleep than file!), but even if it doesn't, at least I've accomplished something and can feel good about that.

Now .. a day of hard work, a relaxing warm shower, a cup of hot apple cider, and pretty soon, I am relaxed and tired. That is how I get some sleep (plus, the fact that now, for the first time in over 2 decades, I NO LONGER have to deal with either my mentally ill/abusive/violent ex or my disabled children -- since (divorced the ex approx decade and half ago -- and he is going to jail for burglary of my residence) and the children are now adults and on their own -- so yes, that alone helps me get some sleep without worrying about what their mental illnesses will bring in either being assaulted or property damage/destruction or anything else in the home.

I can only sleep when my fan is on and when I leave the TV on, set to a timer. I fall asleep to the timer and within 10 minutes, I usually am out like a light. If the room is quite, my mind turns on and I can't stop thinking about things. I think I might be crazy. LOL

The mind has to activate its 'sleep' centre...
Alternatively, calm the body first by breathing slowly, and fully, consciously, just being a non-participating-witness to one's own thoughts... It should work.
