Mafias are only illegal because they're not the ones who write the laws. Those who write the law, get to decide what's legal.

When a mafia man takes money from you against your will, and threatens to punish you if you don't give him your money, but will provide you with some service (like "protection") that you don't want to buy anyway if you DO give him your money, that is called robbery and extortion.

When a politician does the exact same thing, it is called taxation, and some victims actually regard it as a good thing, and defend the practice.

Also, no one really views the mafia as being good for society, but many are still suffering from the delusion that politicians are. Politicians are much better liars than mafia men.
