It is likely that the injector pump pistons are leaking fuel(inside the pump) when the engine is stopped, if on a hill the fuel can drain back to the tank. there is no air getting in so it starts as soon as the fuel pressure has returned. same story when hot. the injector pump is aluminium and the pistons are steel. the aluminium expands more than the steel allowing fuel to get past. Don't lose any sleep over it, it's just a (repairable)sign of old age.

Turn your key to the on position. There should be a light that comes on on the dash that says wait or has a sign that looks like a squiggly wire.It needs to go out before you start your car. They are glow plugs.Diesels don't have spark plugs. The glow plugs preheat the fuel because diesel fuel will only ignite once it reaches 125 degrees F. Once the fuel is warmed up the fuel and air get compress so much on the compression stroke that the compression heats up the fuel all by itself and the fuel explodes with no assistance of a spark.

Mmmm could be your heater plugs, are you giving the car enough time to heat the fuel before starting ? could be your fuel filter needing replaced or cleaned. Also there is a small rubber pressure button on your fuel filter for primeing the filter when changed, rubber could be split.

hi the same problem on a 406 the fuel was draining back to the tank due to a pin hole in the fuel feed pipe. we found it by putting compressed air down the fuel line and soapy water on the pipe.
