"The Exorcist"
When it came out in the 70's my ex husband and I went to see it at a drive in theater. We had a VW bus we had backed in so we could lay in the back bed to watch the movie.
It was so graphic and left little to the imagination. There was a feeling of hopelessness and despair. The thought of an innocent child being possessed by the devil caused a kind of fear I had never experienced. A fear deep in my very soul.
Most horror movies of that time were so fictional you could leave the theater sure that you would not run into Dracula, Frankenstein or the Mummy. But we weren't that sure about satan.
About half way through the movie it started to rain a light mist. It was so eerie.
When we got home that night we prayed on our knees and left the lights on all night long.
I have watched the movie since and it is just as scary to me as it was back then.
Poor Father Merrin.....

I have seen many horror movies, and I love them. I think that's because this is an unexplored emotion - fear, and watching other movies will maybe make you feel something, but watching a horror movie will make you shake for sure!
The best horror movie for me is "The Blair Witch Project". It's about students filming documentry movie in an old forest, they are trying to find a cottage where witch have lived and have killed children.
This movie has the very essence of what people are affraid. It doesn't depend on showing us the most horrible characters, this movie gives us something that we are affraid the most - something it the dark, that we can not see, is coming. We can hear it, it's coming, it's closer, but we can't see it. We know it's horroble, our heart is pounding, it wants to get us, be we just can't see it. And, in this movie, we can have some clue that this thing is unnatural, dark, evil, and we must wait.
This is a must-see, for everyone.

It's "The Exorcist" in my book!
It is not your usual 'horror' movie and could have actually taken place. The characters were rich and alot better developed storyline than many 'slasher' movies of which I don't like.
