get good thesis statements for your essays. take your time when deciding them, put a lot of thought into what you are going to be writing about, what you want to say, and why you want to say it. this will be the foundation of a good essay.

research research research research research.

and then research some more.

obviously, the more you read about a topic the more you should know about it, but that is not the only benefit of an extensive and thorough literature review. you will be reading essays/ reports/ case studies (whatever...) of other published academics in your area of study. this will in turn give you pointers as good ways in which to write [BE WARNED: just because something is published it does necessarily mean it is well written style-wise, but they usually are...].

my old writing lecturer (the fantastic Ros at UQ!!) had a good saying: writing is rewriting. structure your piece, take notes etc. etc. write a first draft and PRINT IT OFF. then proof-read it. you will be suprised as to how many errors can slip past us when we only ever view things on a computer screen. you may have to repeat this process a few times before you are finally happy with it. i know, it'll cost a bit more in printing, but you reap the benefits in a far better end result.

check out your department of studies for their relevant style guide. This will tell you all the little mechanical things, like how they like references and/or citations done, the appropriate way to organise reports (ie subdivisions within), i think it even talks about margin widths and font types and the such... little things that do not some mch improve your writing, but make it appropriate for your area of interest (and which will also effect your grade!).

good luck, i comprehensively failed my first psychology essay after topping english at school. it was a big knock to my confidence, but i never failed another essay or report again! getting used to an academic style of writing can be tricky, but like anything, practice makes perfect (well, considerably better!)!

An essay is a short work of writing that treats a topic from an author's personal point of view. Essays are non-fictional but often subjective; while expository, they can also include narrative. Essays can be learned arguments, literary criticism, political manifestos, observations of daily life, recollections and reflections of the author.
The definition of an essay is vague, overlapping with those of an article and a short story. Almost all modern essays are written in prose, but works in verse have been dubbed essays (Alexander Pope's An Essay on Criticism and An Essay on Man). While today an essay is partly defined by its brevity, voluminous works like John Locke's An Essay Concerning Human Understanding and Thomas Malthus's An Essay on the Principle of Population refer to themselves using the term.

Before you set off to write your paper, know what you want to write. Take a moment to just think. Go slow. That way, when you do sit down to put pen to paper, you'll have a better idea of what you want to say and won't get frustrated with writer's block.
Give yourself a while to write it. If you start the night before it's due, you'll be pounding Red Bull and pulling your hair out. Take a day off to let it come to you. Lie in bed, stare at those glow-in-the-dark stars on your ceiling and let inspiration wash over you.

This is an excellent site that gives a sample essay in MLA style. It is from Diana Hacker's handbook that is used in many English 101 and 102 classes.

if you need help, your college/university should have a writing centre, where teachers and high-level students volunteer to help students increase their writing skills.
