Today I tried cashing a Liberty Bank & Trust loan check ($2,110.00) at one of our two local Region's Bank branch and, this branch is the first I've ever been to because it's further away from me. Anyway, this lady told me (without doing any checking on my account) that the check could not be cashed unless I had the check amount face value in my checking account. I told them that doesn't seem right because I always cash my work checks with the other local Region's bank branch without a problem (and I almost never have the check face value in my checking account). Then the lady said that my job check must be issued by Regions. And I said no, that's not the case. Then they said that that's not possible and that I was wrong. I was really upset at this point. So, I said whatever and left to the other Regions Bank (the one I go to all the time + more diverse) and they cashed my check without a problem. I feel like I have been discriminated upon because I'm latino. Have I been discriminated?

Most banks will cash payroll checks even if there is no or little money in that account. Even if drawn on another bank.

When Ach or check21 gets faster. Then they maybe able to start cashing checks like that.

NO, NO, NO ... YOU HAVE NOT been discriminated against. Banks have to protect themselves against fraudulent checks. Nomally you would need to deposit a check into your account and the bank then collects the money from the bank who issued the check and THEN the funds are available for you to withdraw. They are not obliged to CASH a check from another bank...how do they know the check is good? You should have gone to Liberty Bank & Trust to cash the check .. they can then verify internally that the check you have is a good check and give you the cash. I am surprised that the other branch cashed the check ... that teller is going to get it if the check turns out to be bad..

Regarding cashing your paycheck, if your employer banks with Region's Bank then they are able to verify that the check is good and they will cash it. Also if you are one of their customers and the check is not drawn on their bank they may be willing to cash the check even though they have no way of knowing if the check is good BECAUSE of the fact that they know you and because of the fact that it is a payroll check and they have seen you come in before with a payroll check from this same employeer .. THEY ARE WILLING TO TAKE A CHANCE...BUT they really are NOT required to do that ... If you are going to CASH a check instead of putting it into your account then you need to go to the bank that the check is drawn on .. they can then verify that the person who has written the check has funds in their account and that this is a valid check and then can cash it..

This is true of the check being cashed, now the I bet the bank was willing to deposit the check into your account until it cleared. It has happened to me a few times but not loan checks. Out of town checks.
