If it was, what was that little foray into manufacturing all about?

No it was Acorn that made them, the same company that was responsible for the Electron (virtually a BBC Micro, just slightly different spec) and the Acorn Archimedes (I think that was the first for home use RISC-based computer). It was a company called Acorn that made them for the BBC, the whole idea was to have a computer that people and schools could buy that was the same as the one being used in TV Programmes about computers for children. Quite a clever marketing idea, advertise your own branded computer on a TV station that doesn't strictly advertise, worked quite well too, the machine had quite a decent following for a while - mines in a box in the garage.

they didn't so much make them it was more that they put their name behind them also the said computers were use mostly if not exclusively by schools
