You have stirred up a lot of emotion with this question and hopefully I can shed some light on this because some have got it right and some are way out.
Having spent some time working with Victims and abusers I have gained an insight to both sides of the fence.
You cannot say someone is a Paedophile just because they interact with Children and this has caused huge problems in the past even death where someone was wrongly accused of Molesting Children
A number of answers claim that the majority of Sex Offenders are white Males, this is not necessarily true either, they can be, and are from all cultures Creeds and races, and quite a few are Women.
Grooming is when a Sex Offender selects a child and slowly gains the trust by making the child feel special, giving treats and taking the child's side normally against the parents so the child thinks they have an Adult Friend who cares for them which is a good thing in a child's eyes.
Grooming is usuallyy over a long period of time, and it can take years before any abuse takes place, and the child is usually shocked and confused but feels trapped and doesn't report it because they blame themselves.
I personally do not like the word Paedophile because it actually means "Child Lover" and not meant in a sexual or abusive way,we should just call it Sex Offending.

Paedophilia is greek for 'love of children'. The ad. below might help you.

This is one of those questions that vex...the truth is that we don't know - that's why gossip tends to rule the roost - especially in the populist press in the UK. We will jump on the bandwagon as easy as drinking water - but will not say we were wrong when the original storyteller has been found out as a stirrer. What we will do is say things like this; 'Ah well...was just protecting my bairns' - when in fact it's usually those dears who tend to do the most abuse (physical).
We do not know - and will never know who are paedophiles, and we'll have to get used to it. Just because a man knows how to make a bairn laugh, or is easy with his/her parents does that make him a paedophile (or 'nonce' in the world of populist attitude)? Human nature in the UK as it is, we would all want to see such people executed, but look at it this way; lower-grade prisoners (sex offenders etc.) are never free, and have to look over their shoulders as soon as their cell door is open. Killing all sex offenders just frees them from the paranoia and violence directed toward them - the pain is ended upon death, whereas life amongst the angry, or madmen in jail (rightful or - as in most cases - hypocritical) is their pain, as they have to live through it all and every day.
Getting their three meals a day in prison and watching telly may seem like heaven to the Sun reader, but they are never safe - with the chance of the warders turning away for a couple of minutes on a prison wing leaving convicted sex offender on his own cleaning the toilets, or whatever it they are ordered to do - just enough time for Snarling Sam to cut up and harm with home-made tool...with some warders realising what will happen.

Grooming is a slow progressive series of interactions between the predator and the youth so the young person will get used to them. The stakes are raised higher as the adult tries more and more intense behaviors with the child.
A ped. will spend a lot of time around children, and make an effort to single out a child. Too much holding, tickling and gifts is a sign of a ped. who is focused on a single child.

"Pedophile" is often written with an "a" in it. I'm not sure which countries accept that spelling.
Pedophiles act "too good to be true" to children. They shower the child with attention and often select children who are not getting enough attention. They develop a bond with the child and instill trust. Once they have established that, then they begin taking advantage of the child. There are plenty of pedophiles that don't bother to groom prior to molesting.
You can't really tell if someone is a pedophile. Most pedophiles are white males. Because no one knows who is and who isn't, I make sure that my children are not left unattended with males.
It used to be something like one out of three girls and one out of four boys were victimized. Now it is something like one out of five girls and one out of ten boys are victimized.
The fact that our government did nothing to end this problem which struck so many of our innocent but powerless children is shameful. It took lawyers who put priests behind bars and other entities like Perverted Justice and Dateline to finally make a dent in this awful mess. I can't help but believe that because those in power are white males and those that are molesting are white males, that this problem was not addressed as seriously as it should be. Just like the tobacco companies got away with killing people for so long.

Grooming is the "set-up". It's the sick, manipulative game they play with the child, slowly winning the child's trust (and more importantly, the PARENT'S trust). As for how to tell, most single male adults have no need for the presence of children. If you know of one who likes having children around, that's a bad sign. Unfortunately, this kind of abuse is usually committed by close friends or family.

this term relates to the way a paedophile will lure their victim into revealing personal details about themselves including names adresses and photos etc.ultimately leading to a meeting with the victim. all of this of course is normally done through chatrooms and deception on the part of the paedophiles who lie about their age name etc.

Pedophile does not have an a in it. Grooming I think is when they touch the children and feel them. You know someone is a pedophile when they are dating or very interested in young children, and revolve their lives around them when they're not their own children.

Theoretically it could be anyone. The rule of thumb I go by is if I see the having sex with children, they go on the suspect list IMMEDIATELY.
