Mascara can be intimidating, especially if you've poked yourself in the eye a couple of times!! >_<

The "best way" is really going to depend on what kind of eyelashes you have and what look you are going for. If you have short or very straight eyelashes, then curling first is a good idea. If you have average or long and a normal bend or curve to them, then I find that curling is just an extra step that doesn't add much.

If you want your lashes to look thicker, and you have thin lashes, run the mascara want quickly across them back and forth (left to right motion) then run from the base to the ends of lashes. If you want an "elven" or "cat" look (which emphasizes the outside of your eyes) go a little heavy on the outsides. Repeat on bottom.

Longer eyelashes are more forgiving. Just leave out the back and forth step from above. Really take your time with the stroke from base to tip, until you get use to it. This will ensure steady, straight strokes-- and no poking the eye!

If you just want a sporty or "no make up" look, wipe most of the mascara off the wand, then apply as normal, but focus more of the tips of lashes, which are naturally darker.

You can use whatever mascara suits you best, but I suggest Almay, because if you aren't use to mascara it's pretty gentle on your eyes.

Be sure you are working on a clean canvas, this canvas being the eyelashes. Be sure you have already applied the desired amount of eyeshadow before beginning. Mascara can often be pretty tricky; you don't want clumps of sticky goo on your lashes.

Wave the mascara wand across your lashes in an outward swoop with your eyes open, gently closing them to get the most off of the wand.

Move from the inside of your lashes out, making sure not to miss any on the way. To be sure there will be no clumping, it is imperative to give the mascara wand a slight wiggle while moving towards the end of the lashes; this will give you the most length and fullness of your lashes. Follow this step until you have reached the desired look.

Apply mascara to the bottom row of lashes (optional). To apply, simply work from the outside in, or the opposite of the way you did on the top row. You don't want to make your lashes look too overdone so when applying to the bottom row don't cover all lashes, only the lashes towards the outer corner of the eye.

Be sure to apply more mascara to the lashes both top and bottom before the first layer dries. If you wait until they have dried, the mascara will begin to flake off and often will end up in your eyes, and will certainly give you a great amount of discomfort. Follow each step the same way with the other eye and you are on your way to much more detailed eyes.

The links below will give you the various techniques and tips on applying mascara.

hold a tissue in your hand and run the wand through it to get rid of any extra. Start from the outer eye area and do the top lid first. Put two coats on the top and only one on the bottom. Make sure you put it on before your eyeshadow or you may get some on your eyelid and have to redo the shadow.

I do a thin layer, first on one eye, then the other. Keep going back and forth so both are even. I like to make it thicker on the outsides too. A lot of people put it on their bottom lashes too, but it looks awful on me
